Over his 36 years, he solved the dynamic load profile of the utility by managing a suite of demand response programs. Grant led an extremely talented team that designed and ran multiple demand reduction programs to cost-effectively provide the necessary level of load relief to manage the grid, satisfy PG&E’s customers and give regulators confidence in PG&E's ability to effectively manage their grid. In addition, Grant Managed PG&E’s Energy Services (energy efficiency) department. There, he directed a team of experienced engineers to create engineering calculations that proved PG&E’s energy saving claims. He led ongoing engineering support for customized project reviews, codes, and standards, emerging technology and ZNE demonstrations, as well as all other technical aspects of running one of the nation's largest energy efficiency programs. Grant also led PG&E’s Customer Systems research and development organization, providing basic and applied research and field demonstrations of technology at and beyond the customer's meter. The group researched automated metering (precursor to Smart Meters), energy storage, end-use systems (building systems and appliances), and power quality, as well as alternative fuel vehicles. Grant received a B.S in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. He believes the variability conundrum can be solved with the correct tool, and that tool is Ari. Paul is a lifelong tinkerer and problem-solver. As a young person, he was enamored of automobiles and studied mechanical engineering. He began his career as an intern for Toyota, running data acquisition equipment, dynamometers and road tests. Paul’s natural curiosity about engineering then led him to Western Container Corporation (WCC), where he was involved in an initiative to reduce the plastic content in Coca-Cola bottles. He ensured the redesigned tooling produced bottles that met quality standards, and helped design, lay out, and install several production lines. The resulting 6 mm of change in bottle design meant $60 million in saving s to Coca-Cola across the supply chain. As a frontline supervisor at a new WCC plant, Paul worked as an engineer alongside operations managers so that he could better understand their challenges. He became a General Manager at the WCC plant in Benicia, CA, where he led the management team in meeting all budget obligations without increasing costs to customers. Paul then began to explore operations management in depth as a Corporate Plant Engineer; this provided him an added measure of credibility and helped him build bridges between engineering and operations teams.
